Interdisciplinary Program on Athletic Footwear and the Importance of Insoles
This course focuses on the critical role of footwear and insoles in athlete health and performance enhancement. The first section introduces the relationship between foot structure, ground reaction force distribution, postural stability, and movement efficiency, highlighting how different foot types and sport demands influence the need for support, cushioning, and stability. The second section approaches the topic through sports biomechanics, explaining the scientific principles behind footwear and insole design, including pressure distribution, ankle and knee joint moments, landing mechanics, arch-support functions, and the impact of shock-absorbing materials on lower-limb loading. Various functional insole types and modern design materials are also discussed. The final section emphasizes injury prevention and comfort enhancement, exploring how insoles help reduce the risk of plantar fasciitis, medial tibial stress syndrome, knee pain, and overuse injuries. Practical applications in high-impact activities, long-duration training, jumping, and directional changes are also addressed. Overall, the course integrates scientific theory with practical application, enabling students to understand the importance of footwear and insoles in optimizing performance, maintaining musculoskeletal health, and preventing injuries.
