Exercise Training and Safety Considerations for Adults Aged 65 and Older with Prehypertension
This course provides a comprehensive overview of exercise training and safety considerations for adults over 65 years old who are in the prehypertensive stage. The first section introduces the definition of prehypertension, related risk factors, age-related cardiovascular changes, and the impact of aging on blood pressure regulation. Students learn why older adults with prehypertension face increased risks of cardiovascular disease, stroke, and kidney complications, highlighting the importance of early preventive management. The second section focuses on the exercise needs of older adults with prehypertension, including appropriate training modalities such as moderate-intensity aerobic exercise, resistance training, flexibility work, and balance exercises. Topics also include exercise intensity prescription using RPE and heart-rate monitoring, and how regular physical activity can improve vascular elasticity, reduce peripheral resistance, and enhance autonomic regulation. The final section discusses safety precautions and risk management during exercise, such as pre- and post-exercise blood pressure monitoring, avoiding sudden strenuous activity, environmental temperature considerations, interactions between medications and exercise, risks of orthostatic hypotension, and individualized exercise adjustments based on health status. Overall, the course emphasizes scientific exercise design, clinical safety, and elder-friendly strategies to equip students with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed for exercise interventions in older adults with prehypertension.
