Sarcopenia and Nutritional Supplementation in Older Adults (II)

This course continues the topic of sarcopenia and focuses on prevention strategies, functional health maintenance, and integrated lifestyle interventions for older adults. The first section introduces key principles of sarcopenia prevention, emphasizing the role of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and daily physical activity. Students learn how resistance training, balance exercises, and increased daily movement help prevent the decline of muscle mass and strength while reducing the risk of falls and disability. The second section highlights body composition maintenance and functional health management, covering the importance of lean mass, fat mass, and skeletal muscle index (SMI). The course explains how resistance training, aerobic exercise, and adequate protein intake contribute to healthier body composition and discusses functional fitness indicators—such as gait speed, chair-stand performance, and balance tests—that reflect independence and health risk. The final section explores comprehensive lifestyle interventions, including dietary strategies, mind–body activities, social engagement, health monitoring, and functional training, and how these factors interact to promote healthy aging. The course emphasizes multidisciplinary approaches and encourages students to design effective, sustainable sarcopenia-prevention programs that enhance longevity and quality of life among older adults.
