Sarcopenia and Exercise in Older Adults (II)

This course continues the theme of sarcopenia and exercise for older adults, focusing on resistance and balance training principles, exercise safety and risk prevention, and integrated exercise strategies for enhancing functional health. The first section covers the design principles of resistance training and balance exercises for older adults, explaining how movement selection, training intensity (load, repetitions, sets), tempo, equipment use, and functional movement patterns contribute to maintaining muscle mass and preventing sarcopenia. Emphasis is placed on individualized programming to ensure both safety and effectiveness. The second section highlights common risks encountered during exercise among older adults, including falls, orthostatic hypotension, joint discomfort, cardiovascular strain, and fatigue management. The course provides guidelines for pre-exercise assessment, environmental adjustments, monitoring tools (such as RPE, heart rate, and movement quality), and strategies for managing high-risk individuals to ensure safe participation. The final section introduces integrated exercise strategies that combine aerobic exercise, resistance training, balance work, flexibility training, and mind–body activities to promote comprehensive functional health. The focus is on enhancing overall well-being, mobility, independence, and fall prevention through multidimensional and elder-friendly training models. Overall, the course emphasizes evidence-based design, personalized exercise prescriptions, and holistic strategies that help older adults improve functional health, extend healthy lifespan, and enhance quality of life.
