From picture books to page turners-Growing a love for reading
This lecture offered an in-depth exploration of teaching children to read English picture books. Drawing on a multidisciplinary teaching background, the speaker pointed out that children’s reading difficulties often stem from multiple factors, including semantic comprehension. Teachers therefore need to flexibly apply both top-down and bottom-up strategies, while also emphasizing the crucial role of Sight Words. The speaker advocated using picture books to foster meaningful learning and to guide students in connecting stories with their own life experiences. In practice, the speaker shared several creative teaching ideas: using color coding to invite students to read along and participate in word pronunciation activities; demonstrating how to analyze a book cover through Blue Chameleon; and using worksheets based on No, David! to guide students in creating classroom rules. In addition, the speaker introduced a variety of engaging classroom activities, such as using the game Spot It! to identify Sight Words, guessing book titles through emojis, and sequencing story picture cards with transition words. These activities help teachers effectively enhance students’ reading ability and classroom engagement.
