Ministry of Education USR Plan (2025–2027): Integrating University Social Responsibility into Institutional Development Planning — Course: "Introduction to Social Prescribing: Museum Case Studies and Experiential Learning"
The University of Taipei’s USR (University Social Responsibility) project continues to promote the concept of "Social Prescribing." It hosted a workshop titled "Introduction to Social Prescribing: Museum Case Studies and Experiential Activities" at the Taipei City Hospital Ju-Guang Center for Healthy Aging and Empowerment. Bringing together experts from the medical, educational, and cultural sectors, the event utilized interdisciplinary lectures and hands-on activities to deepen the potential for implementing and practicing social prescribing within local communities. Centered on the intersection of cultural participation, artistic experiences, and health promotion for the elderly, the event combined expert insights with interactive experiences to introduce participants to the concepts and diverse application models of social prescribing. The morning session began with Dr. Liu Jian-liang, Director of the Dementia Center at Taipei City Hospital, introducing "Easy-to-Read Design Guidelines." He shared how information design that is more user-friendly, clear, and accessible can help older adults and individuals with dementia improve their comprehension and opportunities for participation. Following this, Ms. Tseng Li-chuan—a "Senior-Friendly Activity Planner" certified by the Ministry of Education—introduced an "Easy-to-Read" mobile toolkit designed for cultural institutions. She also facilitated hands-on activities, using simple physical exercises and interactive board games to guide participants in experiencing firsthand how to design activities for seniors and practice companionship techniques. The afternoon session featured a case study presentation titled "Museum Prescriptions" by Dr. Huang Hsing-ta from the Department of Arts and Creative Industries at National Dong Hwa University. Drawing on domestic and international perspectives regarding cultural and artistic engagement—and combining real-world examples with practical experience in arts-based initiatives—Dr. Huang illustrated how art serves as a vital medium for fostering mental health, social connection, and elderly care. He also guided participants in understanding the multifaceted roles that museums and cultural venues play within the framework of social prescribing. In addition to lectures, the event featured interactive discussions and experiential activities designed to help participants better understand the impact of cultural engagement on physical and mental well-being, as well as how to integrate cultural resources into community health promotion efforts. Through cross-disciplinary collaboration among the medical, educational, and artistic sectors, the event showcased innovative applications of "social prescribing" in health promotion and community support. Moving forward, the University Social Responsibility (USR) project at the University of Taipei will continue to connect diverse community and cultural resources, fostering a more inclusive and supportive age-friendly environment.
