Possibilities for Independent Living, Self-Determination, and Reasonable Accommodation for students with special educational needs in Higher Education under the CRPD Framework
To strengthen the understanding of resource center counseling staff at higher education institutions regarding the core principles of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), with a focus on the rights to independent living, self-determination, and equal participation, and to enhance their understanding of the policy implications and practical applications of these principles in higher education. The workshop also deepens participants’ understanding of reasonable accommodation, clarifies its distinction from differential treatment and undue burden, and enhances their practical ability to provide academic support, assessment accommodations, and assistance with campus life adaptation. Through integrated analysis of theory and case studies, participants will develop professional competencies in assessing support needs, planning individualized strategies, and collaborating across units when working with students with diverse needs. The workshop aims to promote a student-centered support model, strengthen the practical application of CRPD principles, safeguard students’ educational rights, and promote effective inclusive education.
