Meaning Construction through Expressive and Creative Movement1
Centered on Professor Liu Shu-Ying’s theme, “Expression, Creativity, and Meaning-Making through Movement,” this course began with the perspective that “the body is a body of knowledge.” Participants were guided to explore the relationships among bodily perception, movement expression, and artistic creation through Creative Dance and Brain Dance. Brain Dance was used as a warm-up, beginning with heartbeat rhythms, breathing, body parts, and everyday life experiences to foster body awareness and group cohesion. The course integrated Laban movement theory, Dalcroze’s body-rhythm perspective, and movement elements such as weight, time, space, and flow. Through creative finger plays, body-part combinations, improvisation, and group performances, participants learned to “speak through the body” and transform diverse media, texts, and personal experiences into aesthetic and meaningful mind-body representations.
