Getting Close to Mathematics, Understanding Mathematics in Depth
This talk centers on the idea of “Give an Example and Explain”, exploring how mathematics can become more approachable, understandable, and ultimately comprehensible through mathematical situations encountered in everyday life. Beginning with the calculation of community management fees, the talk illustrates that mathematics involves not only linear thinking and weighted concepts but also negotiation and rational communication. Through activities such as classification, comparison, and pattern recognition in everyday life and cultural contexts, learners are guided from the fundamental mathematical elements of number, quantity, and shape toward developing mathematical thinking skills, including generalization, specialization, conjecturing, and justification. The talk further presents the mathematical world as consisting of three interconnected subspaces: examples, concepts, and properties (theorems). The speaker emphasizes that a comprehensive understanding of mathematics can be developed by recognizing the functions of examples, the relationships among concepts, and the underlying connections among mathematical properties. Using proportional reasoning as an example, the talk illustrates the relationships between mathematical concepts and properties, as well as the importance of deductive reasoning. Finally, the talk highlights the principle of “Being able to provide an illustrative example anytime, anywhere.” The speaker encourages learners to deepen their mathematical understanding through examples, connections, and reasoning, develop the ability to apply mathematical knowledge flexibly, and ultimately appreciate the essence of mathematics and the beauty of mathematical thinking.
